Mathis has been playing guitar and drums for more than thirty years, developing his skills through band experience, steady rehearsing, and plenty of jamming and improvising. Mostly self-taught, he believes that spending real time making music with others is one of the best ways to become comfortable on your instrument. His work has been recognized by Creative Loafing with awards for Best New Local Music Act in 2008 and Best Band To Rock The Casbah in 2010.
He sees music as a personal journey of self-discovery and expression, and his goal is to help students move toward their own musical goals quickly and directly. Mathis is interested in what each student wants to learn and achieve, and lessons focus on building confidence, developing skills that feel meaningful, and keeping the process fun.
Mathis collaborates with many musicians in different formats under his own name. He loves music from around the world, enjoys exploring new instruments, recording, and writing songs, and also loves reading and peaceful walks in nature.
