Kevin teaches guitar, saxophone, and ukulele, and brings over five years of experience as a music educator. He began playing guitar at age twelve after receiving a gifted instrument from a family friend. While his initial interest was casual, his inspiration to take music seriously began after watching School of Rock. Since then, Kevin has performed in a variety of rock and jazz bands, toured the country playing small clubs, and released several recordings. More than anything, music is a spiritual practice for him. It offers a lifelong pursuit of growth and creativity.
His teaching philosophy blends real-world application with traditional music pedagogy. He encourages students to develop their musical instincts, not just their technical skills. Lessons often include ear training, music composition, and improvisation, alongside sight reading and theory. For younger students, a lesson might include identifying pitch differences, humming along with chords, and working through a workbook. For more advanced students, the focus may be on learning music by ear and then analyzing it using music theory.
Outside of music, Kevin is a writer and holds a PhD in anthropology. His academic background and love of learning enrich his teaching style and help foster a broader understanding of music as both a cultural and creative form. Kevin welcomes a wide range of musical styles and adapts his lessons to fit each student's unique interests and goals.
